captain Rio Ferdinand injured, out of World Cup
A serious blow to the 2010 World Cup hopes for England was dealt Friday as captain Rio Ferdinand suffered ligament damage in his left knee and has been ruled out for the forthcoming tournament.
Ferdinand, a center-back, injured his knee during a training exercise on England's first full day of practice in South Africa. The Lions are already plauged by the injury bug, as midfielder Gareth Barry is just now recovering from injuring his ankle last month, not to mention star midfielder David Beckham missing the cup with an Achilles' tendon tear.
To fill Ferdinand's roster spot, Tottenham Hotspur's Michael Dawson was being flown to South Africa on Friday. Filling Ferdinand's key spot in the center of the English defense will likely fall to the duo of Matthew Upson and Ledley King. Midfielder Steven Garrard, meanwhile, will assume the on-field captaincy.
According to English coach Fabio Capello, "It is obviously bad news and everyone with the squad is very disappointed and sorry for Rio."
England opens its World Cup with a matchup with the United States June 12, a game that has been much-publicized on both sides of the Atlantic.
